The pecking heads of the pigeons move in sync to the footsteps of the locals who came to gather at the Plaza da Armas, Arequipa, Peru. The sun beats down leaving a contrasting glow to where my flesh is hidden. The fountain is focal point to snapshots and refreshing thoughts in this bathing heat. Swinging chains looped through cast iron rungs separate the detailed hedges and green pastures- which are understood as out of bounds. Couples embrace in the cities beauty- minds at ease ignoring the looming volcanoes in its milieu.
Palm trees and illuminating fauna give color to the adequately named “white city”. Visitors pass like clockwork selling vibrant gelatos, homemade popsicles and finger puppets, while photographers weighted down by obsolete cameras make their rounds about the city center.
With my shades obscuring the sun; I sit and soak it all in.
